The Lost Art of Fathering and How to Get it Back

I’ve shared before how my life verse is Malachi 4:6.

And He will return parents’ hearts to their children and children’s hearts’ to their parents…

I live to see this be fulfilled in our earth. Hearts being reconnected – between generations, between genders, between cultures…

As a woman, I want to be a good mother, I want to have the mother-heart of God towards those He places around me to teach, nurture and comfort.

But there is another parent figure in the equation. The fathers of our world. Those who have been equipped to display the father-heart of God on the earth.

Men, whether they have physical children or not, have the qualities of our Daddy God resident within them. They chose whether they will be an example of our Heavenly Father or not.

Three primary roles of the father-heart of God, and thus the men and fathers of our earth are to provide:

  • Protection. So many young people don’t feel like they have much value because there has been no one to create boundaries of safety in their lives. Men, you can set those boundaries, creating value for those lives and bringing protection to our young people.
  • Identity. It seems that all of America is lost in an identity crisis. Rather than blaming the young people who are lost and confused, I’d love to see men raise up and begin to love and speak the identity of Jesus into their hearts.
  • Provision. It is good to put value on hard work. But the stinginess that prevails in our culture is ugly. If men will begin to pour resources into the younger generation, they can empower them, prepare them and then launch them into all that God has for them.

I long to see Godly men raise up and protect, speak identity to, and provide for an upcoming generation. I cheer every time I see it. Especially this month, as we celebrate fathers, I pray that men would embrace the call of fathering a generation.

“There are a lot of people around who can’t wait to tell you what you’ve done wrong, but there aren’t many fathers willing to take the time and effort to help you grow up.” 1 Corinthians 4:15 (The Message)

  1. So true! God wants each of us to encounter the Father’s heart regularly because He knows that it’s only in this connection where joy, hope, and love reside!
