6 Reasons I Love the Holidays: Focus on Extravagance

Extravagance. In the Christian world, or even in the humanitarian world, it can be a naughty word. It can be looked at as a negative word, the mindset that anything above a ‘basic need’ is foolishness. A generous God can be hard to comprehend, an extravagant God is nearly impossible to fathom. But I have experienced and seen in Scripture this ‘extravagant God’ and find reason to follow His example.

In the world during the holiday season, there is a lot of extravagance. While I would agree that sometimes pouring money into unnecessary decorations and gifts could be foolish, celebrating is God’s idea. Celebration, by it’s nature, is doing more than usual, more than necessary.

I think God loves extravagance because it points to His incredible glory. HE is over-the-top! All through Scripture, we see God as an extravagant God. He gives instructions to build extravagant temples and extravagant boats. He takes care of His people in unique and extravagant ways. And, in Jesus, He gave the most extravagant gift… His only Son.

John 10:10 tells us that Jesus came to earth to “give life with joy and abundance”. Not just enough life to ‘get by’ but abundance! Let’s compare the words extravagance and abundant…

extravagance: excessive or unnecessary expenditure or outlay of money

abundance: an extremely plentiful or over-sufficient quantity or supply

Both are more than enough! Both are unnecessary or over-sufficient! If God gives in abundance, it’s safe to say He is extravagant!

In Philippians 5:19, we see that God provides for our needs extravagantly. How much ‘glorious riches’ does He really have?

“Know this: my God will also fill every need you have according to His glorious riches

in Jesus the Anointed, our Liberating King.”

Extravagance is like the star on top of the beautifully decorated Christmas tree. The cherry on top of the banana split.  And Father God delights in letting us enjoy His extravagance. And sometimes that means a trip to Disneyland…
