6 Reasons I Love the Holidays: Focus on Generosity

“With what Epaphroditus delivered to me from your generous pockets, I have even been blessed in excess. I am fully satisfied. I know God is pleased with your dedication and accepts this gift as a fragrant offering, a holy sacrifice, on His behalf.” ~Philippians 4:18 (The Voice)

Tis the season to give gifts! Traditionally, Christmas is marked by giving gifts to those we love. Many are making their lists and checking them twice. Now that ‘Black Friday’ has come and gone, many have started their holiday shopping, if not finished it (Lord knows, that isn’t me!).

Over the holidays and always, we know the Lord wants us to have a giving heart and giving hands but the above verse shows us that He pleased when we have generous pockets, when we will bless someone in excess. I think we have all experienced that feeling of “it’s more blessed to give than to receive” but to find joy in giving more than needed… to bless someone in an over-the-top kind of way…. is a truly amazing feeling!

It’s often easy to stop at giving just what’s needed. And fulfilling a need is beautiful thing. But during these holidays, I encourage you to find someone to give to in an over-the-top way. Maybe it’s someone you wouldn’t normally give a gift to. Maybe it’s someone who you’ve already planned to bless but you go back and add a little extra.

We worship a God who doesn’t stop at what is needed. He didn’t just give a blood sacrifice to save us from our sins, He gave us His only Son. And His gift didn’t stop with only making a way for us to go to heaven when we die. He made a way for us to have relationship with Him and get to know Him in the here and now. He is the ultimate example of generosity – which means: liberal in giving or sharing; unselfish; free from meanness or smallness of mind or character.

This holiday season, let’s all choose to be generous in our giving… with our giving and with our lives!
