Day 21: Offering Up My Routine

I’m naturally a very routine-oriented person. It may be hard to imagine if you’ve followed our lives at all for the last 6 years. Or even if you know my husband at all.

The man I married is like liquid goo. He goes with the flow – hates routine. He doesn’t like lists or calendars. I love lists and calendars. Making dinner plans with friends for 2 hours from now is the way he rolls. I would rather have a week’s notice. But over the years, I’ve had to learn to adapt to him and he’s had to learn to adapt to me. We are learning to adjust to each other as needed for our life together.

For the last 6 years, we’ve been in full-time traveling ministry. There’s not much routine when your location changes weekly or sometimes every few days. One year, we lived in 4 different places within 7 months – plus our ministry travel. We’ve eaten more meals on the road or in others’ homes than we’ve eaten at our own home. Some months we’ve spent more nights in hotels or others’ homes than in our own beds. We’ve driven all night. Or woke up at 2:30am to catch a flight. We’ve been in church services until well after midnight. My kids have done school work at others’ kitchen tables, on airplanes, on trains, on the floor in a stranger’s living room. It has been in this season that I have had to learn to offer up my love affair with routine.

I’m not perfect at it. Sometimes I clutch my love of routine a little too tightly. The offering up is hard. When obedience is to change plans at the last minute but I want to hold to the plans made last week. When obedience is saying ‘yes’ to a last minute ministry opportunity. No, the offering up isn’t always easy but there is always a reward for walking in obedience.

And the funny thing is, now that my season of life looks a little different (I don’t go with my husband on his ministry excursions much any more), I find myself getting bored with my routine sometimes. 😉
